The race will now take place on Sunday 10th October 2021. Entries will open in the summer. More details to follow.

JP’s Exe to Axe 2020 — Update.

Sadly we have had to cancel this year’s running of JP’s Exe to Axe which was to take place on Sunday 27th September 2020. Having gone through the guidelines, we have had to face the fact that we would not be able to make the race Covid-19 secure, either for competitors and their families, for the many helpers and volunteers, or for the general public. All entrants will have received an email from SiEntries informing them of their options for either deferring to next year or to receive a full refund. The next running of JP’s Exe to Axe will be on Sunday 28th March 2021.

JP’s Exe to Axe. Postponed to 9:45am Sunday 27th September 2020.

There is no set guidance yet available on how long this situation will continue but looking at the race calendar we are rescheduling the event for Sunday 27th September at 10am. We hope this allows enough time for the restrictions to be lifted.

On-line entries are available through SiEntries.

  • Changes to the 2020 event
    • Chip timing.
    • Possible route diversion if the replacement to the Alma Bridge at Sidmouth is not open.

    • A new shorter event, Sid to Axe, starting at Sidmouth a 10:45am. Click here for details.

About the Race

The race starts at the Foxes Hole Car Park on the Exmouth Sea Front at 9:45am and follows the South West Coast Path for 20 miles or so and finishes at the Esplanade at Seaton. This is the 17th year of the race. In 2004 the race started from Seaton and finished in Exmouth, but since 2005 it has started in from Exmouth. Originally the distance was just over 20 miles, but a landslip in June 2012 on the outskirts of Seaton has led to a detour which means the distance is now nearer 22 miles. The race has been renamed JP’s Exe to Axe in memory of John Perratt, founding member and longterm Treasurer of Sidmouth Running Club, and a huge contributor to the sport throughout East Devon.

The race is for individuals and relay teams, dogs are not permitted. There is one handover point at Sidmouth, with drink stations at are three handover/checkpoints at Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth Sailing Club and Branscombe Mouth. There will be drink stations at these points as well as at Weston and of course at the finish at Seaton. There will be a back marker but no course marshals. The route follows the coastal path all the way so keep the sea on your right and follow the acorn signs.

A brief description of the course can be found here. We are grateful to everyone who has sent us photos. Click here to see the gallery.

Transport will be provided from the Finish to the Start (Exmouth) but only before the race leaving Seaton at 8:15am and on condition that a place is booked in advance. If runners choose the early start from Exmouth this Transport will not be appropriate.

Please indicate on the entry if this is required so that we can cater for numbers. Individual entries on the day will only be taken at the start and we cannot supply transport after the race. Hand baggage or kit can be transported from the start (Exmouth or Sidmouth) to the finish if required. No Team Entries on the day.

Time Limit: 6 hours. Cut-off times: Budleigh Salterton: 1hr 10mins, Sidmouth: 2hrs 45mins; Branscombe 4hrs 45mins. The cut off times also apply to the Half run option (Sidmouth to Seaton).

Runners who fail to make the cut-off times will be withdrawn from the Race.

There will be an earlier start at 8:45am for runners who would like to take part but who would find these cut-offs challenging.
Please contact us if you would like to register for the earlier start.

There will be mementos for all finishers and teams, though most runners come for the views. Further information will be sent via email to all entries.

On-line entries are available through SiEntries.

Race numbers and timing chips to be collected from the start. 2nd leg relay runners at Sidmouth.
