Message from a grateful Exe to Axe Runner to Corinna, our Star Backmarker!

Hi - could I just say a heartfelt thank you to the back marshal on the race yesterday who kindly and sympathetically shepherded me into Branscombe where I had to withdraw from the run. It was my first dnf in > 35 years of running which provides some testament to the challenge of the course - there is a posting on Runners World that describes this as the most tiring run you can do and not for the mere marathon runner - I would heartily endorse that - (maybe being on my feet all day on Saturday at a dog show wasn’t the best preparation).

Anyway, the point is I was in a bad way about 2 miles from Branscombe and she patiently encouraged me over those miles, stopping when I had to and positively suggesting I could do the final section - but I think I made the correct decision as otherwise your colleagues at the finish would have been waiting a v long time! - she was a star!

After this, London in 3 weeks should be a cinch -

Best wishes

Phil

MESSAGE FROM HONITON RC

Is there any interest at Sidmouth for the Cotleigh Canters that are coming up on Sunday October 9th? (For Entry Form see Race Page).

We have 3 road races on offer: 5K and 10K (2 laps of the 5K) and a 3K Fun Run.

We are hoping that as well as the hardcore runners who will do the 10K we can tempt newer and/or slower runners to try a 5K.

Also we are trying to boost junior running by putting the 3K on the calendar. We have sent out invitations to junior running clubs, and to 20 local primary schools to compete for a primary school team trophy (First 3 highest finishers).

The club tried out the course last night. Fastest 10K was under 40 minutes and even our newest runners enjoyed the course.

Hope some Sidmouth RC are tempted, especially your newer runners and juniors.

MESSAGE FROM JOHN KEAST

Dear Friends,

I hope you will join me at some stage for my birthday celebration/challenge on Saturday 21st May 2011.

Below are the details of the challenge I have set myself for my 50th birthday.  I have been fortunate to have enjoyed my running for over thirty years, much of it around the beautiful countryside of East Devon.  I am planning to run 70 miles on 21st May in under 24 hours and I have set myself this challenge for a number of reasons:

Stating the obvious, it is a challenge and I am not sure that I will be able to complete the distance

The route (described in detail below) is around the perimeter of probably the best ‘playground’ in the world.

It is an opportunity to raise money for the local cancer charity Force – details of the charity can be found at - http://www.forcecancercharity.co.uk/.

Rather than having a party I am hoping friends will join me for stretches of the route, no matter how short – it will be a run/walk averaging 4-5 miles an hour.

To use the old cliché, ‘I am keen for your presence rather than presents’.  For those who would like to put their hand in their pocket I am raising money for the cancer charity Force, donations can be made at http://www.justgiving.com/John-Keast , also happy to relieve you of any cash!

I’d like to stress that the pace will be very slow, now that I am maturing I am starting to appreciate the journey rather than the speed of completion – it’s taken me a while to work this out. I hope it will be a sociable affair and that some folk not normally seen out running will join in and walk a stretch.

I will be joined by friend Don Cawthera, for the entire route, who celebrated his 50th birthday last month – we are happy to be joined by anyone else who would like to do the whole route. We’d also be grateful for support in providing food and drink along the way – please let me know if you are able to help with this.

Route and Schedule
The information below provides an estimate of the distance – you can work out roughly where we will be, based on an average speed of 4-5mph.  You can also ring my mobile (07766664465) or Cathy’s mobile (07779717629) to find out about progress so you can join in at a time and distance convenient to you.

Start – 03.30 Sidmouth Sailing Club, Saturday 21st May 2011.

Summary of route – coastal path to Exmouth, East Devon Way to Lyme Regis, return to Sidmouth along the coastal path (this last stretch is likely to hurt – I am looking forward to much abuse and encouragement along this stretch!)

An invitation from the N1 Tri Club

Some of our Sidmouth members have already had a go at doing a Triathlon but we have now received an invitation from Dennis Elliott the Founder of the N1 Tri Club, which organises a number of activities in the area. There is a link to their website on our 'Links' page but here is their invitation and if you fancy it then give Dennis a ring:-.

I would propose, if you felt it appropriate, to offer Sidmouth Running Club members the opportunity to join some of our events. As the light evenings approach our summer programme will shortly kick into gear and it includes group bike rides and also a weekly sea swim at Sidmouth when families and friends attend to make it a social event too. We also stage a monthly Duathlon. The summer programme means we are not confined by pool space etc.

We would propose waiving any membership fee for three months and we would hope our association would develop to the mutual benefit of each club without compromising the fact that we are entirely separate organisations.

If you would like to chat the matter through in more detail then give me a call on 01395 597241.

Best wishes

Dennis Elliott. (N1 Tri Club)

A quick message from David Hedges:

Wednesday 10 November - Your next off Road session! - David Hedges
Last month saw the first of the Club's Winter Off Road sessions (always the second Wednesday of the month throughout the winter).  We had 10 runners enjoying the evening,  Many for the first time adapting to the fun of keeping away from concrete, street lights and car fumes!

This winter Axe Valley Running Club also are having a 'Darktime Race series'.  They originally were going to have it the same night as our successful evenings but have now changed it to the third Wednesday of the month enabling any of us to join them.   Doing just that Ben Chesters joined them on the 20 October for a 'Race' from Beer Head Car Park over Southdown Common to Branscombe Mouth and back along the Beach and up the cliffs.  Ben came in fourth in 33.40 and James Jackson (who has run with us in the past) came in second in 29.06.

Ben, James and myself also belong to Otter Valley Hash House Harriers (OVH3).  We can be found running around with 30 to 40 others and a few dogs every Thursdays night throughout the year wherever the 'Hare' has decided to lay the trail.  If you see lots of torch lights moving around in the dark places of East Devon on winter Thurday nights you have probably come across the Hash.  If not we have probably already gone to the 'On Down' at the nearest Pub!

So if you have not already been drawn in to keeping away from the concrete and fumes come and try it out at the next Off Road Session.  All you need is a head torch, hi viz vest and appropriate clothing and footwear.  See the Flyer elsewhere on the website and/or speak to Ben Chesters or myself. Enjoy!

This in from Nick Keast Re: 4 Trigs.

The Eleventh Sidmouth 4 trigs Challenge will be held on:

 Sunday 13th February 2011

WARNING – BUCKTON HILL TRIG POINT

The owner of the land around Buckton Hill trig point has requested that runners remain on ‘Public Footpaths’ when reconnoitring routes.

He is rejuvenating the area and is endeavouring to encourage the growth of ‘natural’ flora and fauna.

Access will be kindly granted for the Challenge in February.

Please abide by the owner’s wish and do not jeopardise the future of the 4 Trigs Challenge!

Entry forms will be out in a month or two…
