Events to look out for

Recommended events and notices:

  • Exe to Axe 2018.
The 2018 event will take place on Sunday 8th April, 2018. Details to follow.
  • Club Outing, 8th October.
If there is enough support we are proposing a club coach outing to the Muddifords Cheese Run near Cullompton on Oct. 8th. This is a 5 mile charity fun run so no times, in aid of the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance and an opportunity for us all to run together as a club and support the cause. The event ends at Muddiford Court with live music, BBQ, Tom’s Toasties plus a goody bag which I am informed will include some Wyke cheese. If you would like to enter names to me please by September 25th.

Parrett Trail RelayOct 7, 9:00amSteart Marshes to Winyard's GapWe are trialing a revised format of the race on Saturday 7th October with the aim of reviving the event formally in 2018 and hopefully attracting a broad spectrum of local and more distant teams.

The trial race will be run informally with several 'home' teams to mimic a published event and test the set up. With this in mind, we would warmly welcome teams from other clubs to join us, to give the revised format a proper workout.

While this would be a purely social affair [no fees, prizes or permits] we fully anticipate some runners being competitive, wishing to set benchmark times for the various legs while hunting for team and personal glory.

Given the history of the event and its traditional following, we anticipate between ten and fifteen teams participating on the day.

Amazing!!,

Congrats! Which one did you go for? I'm about to enter my second 100 miler..... though the pain of the first is still a bit fresh! No useful advice as I am not speedy like you 🙂 but lots of uphill walking training is useful cos you end up doing quite a lot of it.... and navigation in the dark which is miserable if you go wrong close to the end.

I love your ambition! We'll done!

I need stability shoes for running, but am struggling to find off road shoes? Is there such a thing? Any tips or ideas? Cheers x ... See MoreSee Less

Yes you can get off road trainers. Tony pryce in Exeter are very good and give good advice, plus they have a machine to work out which trainers are suitable to you xx

Tony Pryce in the Guildhall shopping centre.

I bought a pair of trail shoes a couple of weeks ago and had the same problem. The manufacturers don't seem to provide the different support sizes as they do for Road shoes. I bought a pair that fit and they are fine...

The stability part is less affective and not as necessary off road mainly because of the unevenness of the terrain, your feet are all over the place That said I think you can get a few with mild stability

Not sure if this will help, but....There is a thinking among running science that most of us need stability trainers for some of our runs and neutral trainers for other runs. All dependant on terrain, tiredness of leg muscles, previous injury and form etc. I've found running in stability some days and neutral others helps more than just one shoe type or the other. Also crunching a towel up and pulling it toward you with your toes on a polished floor strengthens. Might help?

I recently bought some half road/off-road ones & went for the fuji trabucos as normally wear Asics. The newest model is a neutral shoe but the fuji trabuco 5 is a trail running shoe for over pronators. As with most Asics they are narrow & you need to go up a full size to get the toe room but have really loved them.

I couldn't find stability trail shoes and my choice was further reduced because of my wide feet. The neutral shoes I bought were fine for the trails but as most runs aren't purely trail I found it hard going pounding along the roads. An option which has worked for me is stability insoles. I use some from Karimore.

Thank you everyone- great tips x

Just found this x

Bought a pair of trail shoes from Tony Pryce in Exeter and they're fab!!

I was going to suggest Salomon so it's good that Becky found that link. Stability is curiously overlooked in off-road shoes. I'd also go on the websites for Inov8, Brooks and Asics to check out their equivalent. Then use sportshoes.com for a good price

Check out LDWA events. I think this year it is the Wye Forest 50 (around 52 miles) for the SW Challenge Event. They are cheap, well-catered, super-friendly and beautiful routes. Not for the desperately competitive though. www.ldwa.org.uk/BristolAndWest/W/3009/wye-forest-50.html

Please make sure you are in the Club before 7pm so you are aware of what is happening on the night, as to make the best use of the daylight that is left we are not doing the group warm up so each group will head straight off just after 7 and warm up on the way. This week (Sept 15th), the Friday run will start from Joney's Cross, at 10am. If we can dodge the showers, there should be some lovely views. Don't expect to avoid all of the mud, but we'll try to keep away from the worst areas.
